In 1923 Disney moved to Hollywood and started producing shorts for national distribution. His first series was Alice in Cartoonland. Disney produced Alice shorts at an average rate of about one every three weeks from 1923-27. After a while they grew stale and were replaced in 1927 by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald was a big hit, but the distribution rights were owned by Charles Mintz, who Disney worked for. Mintz sold Oswald to another studio and in 1928 Disney started his own studio. His first featured character was Mickey Mouse, who looked a lot like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit with round ears. When sound was introduced to the shorts his business took off.
